Don Javi Taco Grill, a chain Mexican restaurant, has just opened its doors at 5621 LaGrange Rd., Countryside. The former Halal Guys location has become the fifth Don Javi location and opened in early January.

The restaurant is small but has plenty of seating and a very clean and well-decorated interior. Upon entry, guests are led to the register to order and pay. Don Javi is not a formal sit-down dining experience, although guests are encouraged to sit indoors, carry out, or even go through the drive-thru.

The customer service was amazing; the employee was very sweet and patient as I contemplated what to order. She gave her recommendations and helped me decide on what to order. I sat down after paying and was quickly met with my food and drinks.

The first item I ordered was the 2 Taco Dinner ($14.25), which comes with two tacos with your choice of meat and cilantro and onions or tomatoes and lettuce, along with beans and rice. They have 16 meat choices and vegetarian options. I ordered the steak tacos with onions and cilantro. The tacos were very flavorful and fresh upon first bite, and with the addition of their homemade salsa, the dish was much more elevated. The beans had a surprising kick to them, a subtle spice that was unexpected. The rice was slightly lacking in seasoning, although the addition of the other ingredients, such as the peas, added flavor. The tacos were outstanding; however, I wasn’t a fan of the beans and rice on the side.

The next thing I ordered was the combo dinner ($15.50), which came with one taco, one tamale, and one quesadilla. I ordered a pork taco with cilantro and onions, and a pepper and cheese tamale. The taco was exceptional, the marinated meat was flavorful, and the ratio of the thinly sliced onions and cilantro to the meat was just right. The tamale, however, lacked in filling and was slightly dry, yet the peppers and cheese itself was appetizing. And lastly, the quesadilla was a nice addition, though not outstanding. I really liked that this meal was an option, as it allows customers to try many different items on the menu in one meal.

And finally, to finish my meal, I ordered their churros ($2). I had high expectations for this dessert, but was slightly let down. The flavor was perfect, it was topped with a lot of cinnamon and sugar, and the churros itself was delicious. However, it was quite cold and felt like it had been sitting out for quite some time. 

Overall, I had a nice time there, and the food was enjoyable, but I believe that there are better local places to go for Mexican cuisine. Still, I’d recommend going and trying it for yourself. The restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 9 a.m.-11 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m.-10 p.m.. Don Javi also offers taco trucks and catering for events and parties, as well as homemade chips and other items sold at the front counter.
