Imagine waking up in the middle of space, completely alone, without any idea how you got there. This was the reality of Ryland Grace in the new release “Project Hail Mary”. The sci-fi film, which arrived in theaters on March 20, 2026, stars Ryan Gosling as he attempts to save the Earth. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film is a touching yet hilarious end-of-the-world thriller.
Gosling plays science teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace who awakens alone on a spaceship with hardly any memory of how he got there. The film shifts from present to past as he slowly begins to remember his mission to save the Earth’s sun from dying. There is a trail of space matter called “astrophage” that is sucking up the sun’s light in every solar system except for one. It is Grace’s job to go and find out why. He encounters many obstacles along the way, hoping that his knowledge and maybe even a certain extraterrestrial will help him save his planet from extinction.
Gosling does a phenomenal job acting in this movie; he has the ability to go from comedic and witty to vulnerable and intense. With such a complex character dealing with fear and doubt, Gosling’s ability to create humor in such a serious topic makes the movie all the more engrossing. It is clear to see the shift in his character in the film and how much confidence and bravery he gains.
The cinematography of this film is incredible, considering the lack of use of a green screen. The visuals of space are beautiful and truly unique. The use of close-ups and camera tilts emphasizes the emotional toils Gosling’s character goes through. As well, the colors help viewers determine the tone at each point in the story, as there are many shifts throughout the film. The cinematography was one of the most eye-catching I have seen in recent films and made the viewers feel as if they were right there with Grace. It was a beautiful film to watch, and I felt fully immersed in the story.
This was one of the best movies I have seen in a while. It had an optimistic feel-good sense to it, yet it was emotional and intense at times. This would be a great film to see with family and friends, and something everyone could find at least one aspect they relate to or find interesting. I would definitely recommend seeing this film for yourself to determine how you can connect with the themes this movie portrays.
