After four months of dedicated practice, on March 14 at Illinois State University, LT’s Special Olympics basketball team placed first, winning the Illinois State championship. In celebration, both SC and NC gathered for an assembly on March 19 to recognize their achievement of marking the program’s first state title in 21 years.
“Seeing the entire school come together to celebrate these athletes was incredibly powerful,” head coach Emma Dominelli said. “Events like this go far beyond wins and [losses;] they build confidence, create lasting memories, and reinforce a sense of belonging.”
The team’s journey started on Jan. 18, when athletes won gold in a three-day tournament and qualified for the state finals. Support from the community in events like Pack the Place built involvement in their season, such that a closing assembly was fitting.
“If moments [like this] encourage even more inclusion, connection, and opportunities moving forward, then it’s an even bigger win than the championship itself,” Dominelli said.
In the assembly, all athletes received public acknowledgement from Dominelli: Tyler Deck, Andrew De La O, Julian Jasso, Dillon Pusatera, Josiah Santana, Tommy Van Eekeren, Conor Mulcahy, Iqui-Balam Nogueda-Nunez, and Ryan Schwartz. The team presented their plaque to the school that will now be displayed on the school campus. Principal Jennifer Tyrrell lauded the team with a short speech. With the assembly coming to an end, students sprang to a standing ovation.
“I hope we are right back here next year, celebrating another state championship for our Special Olympics basketball program,” Tyrrell said during assembly. “We are so proud of [our team] for this accomplishment and for the way they have represented LT.”
