LT denies sailing club

This year LT students tried to form a sailing club at LT, but were denied due to the risk of insurance issues.

“I was definitely bummed out because we had all the details sorted out; we had the money and the connections,” Lily Wojcik ’18 said. “We just didn’t have the support and that was really disappointing to know that the school disapproved of this,” Lily Wojcik ‘18 said.

Wojcik and Casey Gignac ‘18 began talking about forming a sailing club as a joke at first, Wojcik said.

Wojcik and Gignac sent an email to Columbia Yacht club to seek sponshorship. One month after the email to Columbia [Yacht Club] was sent, they were sailing in the city as a team.

Despite LT not having a connection to the club, the sailing club is still active and sailing. They practice on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago, which is about a half mile east of Maggie Daley Park, and race competitively among other high schools. They sail in fall and winter until ice forms, he said.

“I think it’s a fun sport and club that takes lots of strategy,” Chris Hummel ‘18 said. “It’s fun to go downtown and be by the water and sail.”

Although the sailing club is not associated with LT, Principal Brian Waterman is glad that it is keeping students engaged in interests, which is very important.

“Any way that students can get involved is critical,” Waterman said.

The club has only a few members as of right now, but there are many students without sailing experience that are potentially interested, Wojick said.

The fee for joining the club is $350, which does not include the costs such of gear and hotel fees, Hummel said.
