The National Honors Society (NHS) has hosted the annual food drive for several years as a way to serve the community. Donations are collected by the club starting at the end of Thanksgiving break, all the way to Winter Break. This is a school-wide participant event, not just members of the NHS club, as the goal is not only to receive more donations for the drive–but to encourage all students to support their communities.
Drew Magis, NHS sponsor, has been overseeing the drive for several years.
“The purpose of the food drive is to serve those in need this holiday season; we are hoping to exceed our donations from last year by quite a lot through careful planning and strategic announcements,” Magis said.
This event is also not for any purpose of volunteer hour fulfillment, as students cannot count hours by donating to the drive.
“It is purely out of the goodness of hearts that [the NHS members] and other students donate food,” Magis said.
While Magis is the sponsor, the NHS Executive Board leaders are the prime foundation for the food drive. The Executive leaders include Brady Ryan ’25, Jessica Sloan ‘25, Brenik Griffin ‘25, Marin Yates ‘25, Blake White ‘25, and Caroline Gee ’25. These leaders go out and provide supplies, plan meetings for students to create flyers, and continuously post on social media to make sure the drive is well advocated for to the students and community.
“Our biggest mission is to serve the LT community and provide, especially towards the winter months, which is a bigger time of need, and our biggest goal is to get the word out more about it,” Gee said.
Members and the NHS Board have been examining what planning has been done in previous years for the drive and working towards expanding the amount of donations.
“There will be bins planted around both campuses, in popular entrances and hallways, including the Vaughan Building at NC,”Gee said.
Students have the week before winter break to provide any supplies.
“NHS is organizing the event, but we encourage anyone at LT to donate,” Sloan said.
Donations for the drive include canned goods, non-perishable food, and self-care/hygiene products, and will be going towards the Westchester Food Pantry.
“The food drive will be donated to various pantries in the area, and later in the winter, we’re going to host a blanket drive as well,” Gee said.
NHS has been dedicated to giving students the opportunity to participate in service events such as putting together aforementioned care packages, advocating for the blood drive, and making Thanksgiving baskets for the homeless.
