Situated in the Indian Head Plaza, Oak Pantry & Deli has been in business for 10 years, but it was only recently that they expanded their small convenience store into a promising place to get pizza. Just a few months ago, their name was changed from “Oak Pantry Deli” to “Oak Pantry Deli n’ Pizza.” Locals have been raving about the pantry’s pizza quality, taste, and structure, so I had to try it for myself.
The outside is like any convenience store, on the corner of a strip mall, with propane cylinders and firewood for sale outside. Upon entry, aisles of snacks and candy are to your right as slot machines hug the wall. To the left, however, are wood tables in clean condition and quality stools for patrons, all near the pizza counter, separate from the main register. A person at the main register asked if I was here for a slice, to which I declined and asked for several other items off the menu.
The workers were incredibly patient when I was ordering, and kind to me nonetheless. I waited about 15-20 minutes before my food was ready, and drove home to either confirm or disprove the latest favorability.
First, I had the garlic bread ($5). It was wrapped in paper and smelled delicious. However, its appearance was sad. It seemed to be just a piece of sandwich bread with garlic sprinkled on it. While chewy, the general taste was decent but not exceptional.
Next, my mom got the Caesar salad ($12), which actually looked incredibly appetizing. The dressing was served on the side and was a bit tart. My mom described it as a basic salad, but it exceeded her expectations for a convenience store. There is an additional option to add grilled chicken for an extra $4.
They had several tempting pizza options on the menu, including prosciutto arugula, veggie delight, and Italian beef, but I opted for their “Mama’s Famous 4 Cheese Pizza” ($16.80 for 10”). It consisted of garlic, mozzarella, Vermont cheddar, parmesan, basil, and homemade pizza sauce (only three cheeses listed on website). The sauce was not entirely dispersed evenly, as well as the cheese, which meant that each bite tasted a bit different. But when I tell you that this pizza was outstanding, I mean it. Exceedingly diverse flavors, a firm and tasty crust, and delectable pizza sauce all contributed to such a flavorful and satisfying experience that I would recommend to anyone.
Finally, I ordered a plain cheesecake ($6). At first glance, it looks bland and downright miserable, but it turned out to be delightful. Simple, but delicious, and something I wouldn’t want to stop eating.
In conclusion, Oak Pantry’s gas-station environment will garner skepticism and second thoughts from customers, but you will ultimately be generally satisfied with your purchase, especially if you get the pizza. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a new lunch spot. The address is 6925 Joliet Rd., Indian Head Park.
