The boys varsity golf team has had a great start to the season with winning a majority of their matches, and shows signs of potentially being an even better team than last year, Varsity player Jack Curran ’26 said.
“[It’s] difficult to compare until [the] season has finished. [But the] team from last was very good. This season has the chance to be as good or better. Time will tell,” Varsity Head Coach Brian Kopecky said.
The team practices three to four times a school week, either at Cog Hill or the La Grange Country Club. At La Grange Country Club, the team focuses on their short game, like chipping and putting, whereas at Cog Hill, they mainly focus on their long game, like driving and shots outside of 100 yards from the green. They work on these shots at the driving range.
“We’ve been playing well so far this season and have won most of our conference matches and are doing pretty well in the invites,” Varsity player Ben Hare ‘27 said.
The golf team usually plays one to two matches a week, Hare said. They usually compete in one match during the school week or on the weekend, yet sometimes they play twice a week. The games during the school week are always conference games, while the games on weekends are typically tournament invitationals. The conference games during the school week are nine-hole matches and are always against only one team in LT’s conference, while weekend games are 18-hole matches against multiple teams.
“I believe we have a better team than last year and can make it far,” Curran said. “We are a close team, everyone gets along, and we have the same goal of winning. I am really looking forward to what we can do this season.”
At the golf team’s home games at La Grange Country Club, the full roster of 12 players plays, but only four count as the team score, Curran said. For away games, the team usually only brings eight out of the 12-man roster, and still only four count as the team’s score. The four players on LT who shoot the lowest score at each match count as the team score.
“Our team goal this year is to make it to state, and I believe our team can make it if we put in the work and focus during practices and try our best during games,” Hare said.
The team had an intense away game against their rival, Hinsdale Central, on Sept. 4, where they ended up winning the match by only one stroke. LT’s next match is on Sept. 27, at La Grange Country Club against Benet, Fenwick, and Nazareth.
