Girls golf is starting its season undefeated in its first three conference matches. They played Carl Sandburg, Addison Trail, and Oak Park-River Forest.
“We should be competitive, but there are some good teams in our conference, so we will have to play well,” head coach Jeff Johnson said. “Last year’s team was solid, so we would like to continue where they left off and keep trying to improve as golfers.”
Last season, they had two individuals qualify for state, Johnson said. Amelia Van Vuren ‘26 was one of those players, and she is back as a senior this year.
“My personal goals are to be a top 10 finisher in the remaining invites and IHSA matches and to make it down to State,” Van Vuren said. “Our team’s goal is to ultimately qualify for State as a team but also just to get as far in the season as we can as a team.”
Along with Van Vuren, fellow captains Winn Waite ‘26 and Bea Waite ‘26 also played in the state series last season, Johnson said.
“They are providing excellent leadership for our team,” Johnson said.
The team consists of 19 players. Last year, there were only two freshmen. This year, more new freshmen joined the team, making for a large JV.
“We were worried about the size of the team once we [the seniors] all left, but now our program has grown in size and we have a ton of new girls to fill our place,” Van Vuren said.
The team finished ninth in a tough 23-team invitational hosted by Plainfield North and placed second as a team in the Glenbard West quad. Van Vuren placed second individually for the quad and 14th out of 100 at the first invite.
“My favorite part about being on the team is definitely the people,” Van Vuren said. “I love all my teammates; they are what make the season so fun. Whenever I have a bad round, they’re always there to laugh it off, and I forget about it instantly. What’s also nice about the high school season is that I’m always paired up with at least one other teammate during our matches, which has made our bonds stronger and our matches more memorable.”
The team practices at Flagg Creek Golf Course with both range and putting time. Regionals is on Sept. 30 and State is Oct. 10-11.
“This team seems to have a great positive attitude and togetherness as a team,” Johnson said.
