Our Position: LT should provide more dances to promote school spirit.
Let’s be honest: high school isn’t just about grades, tests, and homework. It’s also about memories, the kind you make with friends, music, and a packed dance floor. At LT, there are only two major dances each year: Homecoming and Prom. That’s not enough.
There needs to be more dances at LT, and not just for the fun of it. Dances are a chance to build school spirit, bring students together, and create positive, lasting experiences that go beyond the classroom.
For many underclassmen, Homecoming is the only dance they get to attend. Prom is exclusive to seniors, which leaves nearly three-fourths of the school without a major social event for most of the year. Adding another dance, maybe a winter formal or a casual spring dance, would give more students a chance to be involved.
Introducing more dances could also foster new traditions that students look forward to year after year. Imagine a Winter Wonderland Formal becoming a beloved annual event or a Spring Fling where students from every grade level come together to celebrate the end of the school year. These new traditions could strengthen school pride and give every student, regardless of grade, background, or interests, something special to be part of. It’s not just about adding events to the calendar; it’s about building a legacy of inclusion, excitement, and shared experiences that future LT students can look forward to.
Not everyone is into sports or clubs. Some students don’t get excited about pep rallies or football games. But a dance? That’s something almost everyone can enjoy. Whether it’s a love for dance, dressing up, or just hanging out with friends, school dances offer a safe, inclusive way to connect with peers.
Some might argue that planning more dances takes time, money, and staff resources. That’s true. But students are more than willing to step up. LT has strong Student Council leadership and plenty of clubs like the Athlete Leadership Program, FCCLA, and Hispanic Leadership Council, just to name a few, that could help organize and fundraise. With enough planning and support, hosting an extra dance or two is absolutely realistic.
More dances don’t just mean more fun. They mean more unity. They mean creating a school culture where everyone feels like they belong. Isn’t that what high school should be about?
LT students deserve more opportunities to enjoy their time here. So let’s turn up the music, turn on the lights, and give students more chances to celebrate the moments that make high school unforgettable.
It’s time for LT to say yes to more dancing, more memories, and more student life.
