KOH cancellation rumors
Student council decides on whether to cancel one of LT’s two dances
March 16, 2015
As Maddie Williams ‘18 walked into the King of Hearts dance, she could tell that it was not going to compare to the excitement of Homecoming. With fewer people and an unpopular DJ, it was far from it, but she stayed until the end since it was her first-and maybe last- KOH ever.
For years, KOH has seen declining attendance and for the first year ever, there are threats to cancel it for good.
With ticket sales at an all time low, half of what we sold in 2011 and down 600 tickets sold from last year, the student council is losing a lot of money from it and it may be in their best interest to cancel the yearly event that has been a tradition for decades, Peter Geddeis, Student Activities Director said.
“Kids have gotten used to dances,” Geddeis said. “It isn’t just LT, other activity directors have seen the decrease too.”
The student council is making the decision on whether they are going to cancel the dance during their weekly meetings, and wish to make the decision by the end of the year.
The loss of revenue from the sales decrease may result in losing the student council barbeque and the senior citizens prom, but no final decisions have been made. If they do not cancel the dance, they may have an informal dance where people don’t dress up, or change how it’s run to make it new and exciting for people getting more to attend, according to Geddeis.
People didn’t go for a variety of reasons, but a lot of people ended up following what their friends did. Once the word got out, many students made the decision that they were not going to go because they knew there was going to be low attendance, Williams said.
“I think a lot if people did not attend KOH because that’s what their friends decided to do, and they were just jumping on the bandwagon,” Williams said. “It was fun, I just think the music choices could have been better and the DJ was not my favorite.”
The dance was mostly freshman who wanted to go to their first KOH, but there was even a lot of freshman who didn’t show up and many who decided to leave the dance early.
“We have considered replacing it with another dance, but nothing is final yet,” Haley Gorman, student council officer said. “There are a lot of options out there, one of which is a new DJ, a new format, or no dance at all.”
The cancellation of KOH will affect many of LT’s students, but if that low of people go, then it is better to not have the dance so that the student council can get back the money they put into Homecoming and other big events, Gorman said.
Until student council makes their final decision, we are still planning on having KOH, but the chances of it being the same as the past years are low.
