Each year, the LT Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Club organizes an event called Lyon Con. This year, the event takes place on Nov. 15 and 16 at the LT Corral and is open to the general public. Anyone can come and play games, have fun, connect with others, and participate in the costume contest on day one of the event, Director of Lyon Con and D&D club advisor Bill Allan said.
“It is unique; there is literally no other small convention like Lyon Con in the suburbs around us,” Allan said. “It’s an opportunity to show up, have fun, play games, and connect face to face with other people.”
Allan, also the LTTV teacher, is in charge of everything at Lyon Con. He plans the event and books, artists and vendors. One of the vendors at the convention is Fair Game in LaGrange, which also helps run events at Lyon Con, Allan said. Organizing all the games that are set up at Lyon Con, Allan receives help from D&D Club co-advisor Greg Semaan, as well as other students in the D&D and Board Game clubs. Allan started the convention in 2018 before there was a D&D Club.
“I had been to a lot of gaming conventions, and I thought that it would be cool for LT and the communities to have a family-friendly convention that focused on gaming but also included other fandoms like comics, cosplay, anime, and so on,” Allan said.
D&D club member and Lyon Con participant Finn Riley ‘26 has been involved since his sophomore year and was introduced to Lyon Con through D&D Club, Riley said. His first year at Lyon Con, Riley got the Board Games club to provide their game shelf for the event, which he ran, and this year, he was in charge of the D&D one-shot game.
“I participate in Lyon Con because it’s super fun,” Riley said. “It’s a great time to just play games all day and hang out with friends.”
The goal of Lyon Con is for people to come together and have fun, along with exploring activities and games people like or maybe have never heard of, Riley said. Attendees can see what types of things they might like that they’ve never thought they would be interested in, and actually be able to participate in these activities.
“Lyon Con is a space for everyone,” Riley said. “If anybody is nervous about going because you don’t have anyone to go with or it seems a little weird, just go and find someone new.”
