LT will hold free cardiac screenings from the organization Young Hearts for Life to detect possible heart issues in students.

“It is important for students to partake in cardiac screenings,” Jennifer Bialobok, coordinator of community relations, said. “This program makes it easy for students and parents to be aware of these cardiac issues.”

Young Hearts for Life is a nonprofit organization that started in 2006 and operated in many other schools in the surrounding suburbs before coming to LT. 2015 marks the third year LT is holding this program

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics 2,000 people under the age of 25 die of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States every year.

Each year at LT, about a dozen students are recommended for further testing, said Bialobok.

The cardiac screenings will be held at South Campus on Nov. 12 in the South Campus gyms and at North Campus they will be held in the Vaughn Gym on Nov. 13.

Young Hearts for Life sends the medical staff and medical personal but most of the tests are done by LT students. LT needs a total of 250 volunteers for the two days Bialobok said.

“Volunteering requires no medical experience, but all volunteers mstparticipate in a quick training session the night before the screenings,” Bialobok said.

Elsa McMahon ’18 is a volunteer on the junior board for Young Hearts for Life. McMahon’s aunt and uncle founded the organization.

“I would definitely recommend this to all students because it is a great service that saves lives.” McMahon said.

The screenings only take minutes and students will be pulled out of their gym classes for the testing. The results are sent to Young Hearts for Life to be analyzed, the school never sees the results, said Bialobok.

For students the service is free but the total cost for LT is $15,000. Cardiac screenings are recommended every two years for students Bialobok said.

“I think all students should participate in this event,” Bialobok said. “It’s quick, easy and overall a great program.”
