Not only is Netflix a form of entertainment, but it has also provided information on serious problems our society faces. Netflix provides this through documentaries like “Blackfish,” “Living on One Dollar” and “Super Size Me.” These films are examples of one of the innovative ways information has been delivered to consumers digitally.

These documentaries have begun to beat print issues on the same topics and have shown that most information is becoming digitalized.

With the digitalization of information, there has been a decline of people buying newspapers. Print articles have been diminishing. Most newspapers offer both a print and online edition of their newspapers, but some have lost readers from print, so they are forced to only provide news online. Many of these are college newspapers. Although print is still an option for many newspapers, most have adopted the idea of “web-first.”

The majority of websites have stayed consistent with the amount of material posted online, but some have discontinued sections of the paper, reduced the size of the paper and eliminated editions of the paper that attract fewer readers.

Documentaries have also played into the cause of this decline. Filmmakers provide an entertaining way to present the same information to viewers. These filmmakers often do this through creating a central character for their documentaries. This makes the documentary more memorable for the viewer.

Netflix is a place to find information that has been digitalized. The effect of information being displayed digitally is apparent through many documentaries. For example, one of the documentary offerings on Netflix is “Super Size Me.” The release of this documentary had an incredible impact, despite the fact that many articles focused on the same subject had already been written. The documentary “Super Size Me” created a nutritional debate that would change the country. Just six weeks after it was released, McDonald’s eliminated all Super Size menu items.

Another documentary offered on Netflix, “Blackfish”, focuses on the effect of putting killer whales in captivity. “Blackfish” created awareness of how the mistreatment of animals can dangerously affect both the animals and humans involved. After the release of this documentary, the attendance of Sea World dropped immensely due to the mistreatment of killer whales as captured by the documentary. These are only two examples of how documentaries can change the views and beliefs of people drastically.

Digitalization of information offers a new way for people to read or view information that has become more effective than print articles.
