League of Women Voters pushes student registration

The League of Women Voters is holding a voter registration event on March 5 with hopes to set a new state record for the largest number of students to register in a single day at one high school, which they were able to do last year with 427 students. There’s a greater motivation for students to register at this event because of the upcoming April 7 election votes for District 204 School Board seats.

“Very often the excitement of a presidential election motivates registration, but really the outcome of local elections can have a greater impact on citizens’ daily lives,” member of League of Women Voters Stephanie Nelson said. “This might be such an instance.”

The League will be holding a forum March 19 in the PAC where students, parents and citizens can go and hear candidates speak on the issues and answer questions from audience members. Students that attend can submit questions during the forum and also through email until March 16 to [email protected].

“We feel that students have a special stake in registering,” Nelson said. “There are issues that impact LT students which might encourage them to register, research the candidates’ positions and vote responsibly.”

A training event was held at NC on Feb. 3 to certify students to become Illinois Deputy Registrars, allowing the 11 students that participated to be able to register their fellow students to vote.

“I feel like many high school students, myself included, become very caught up in our day-to-day lives, and lose sight of some of the bigger picture issues facing our community and our country,” student liaison Madeline Bernstein ‘15 said. “Voting is an easy way to look outside our daily bubble, and to become aware of some of these important issues.”
